Biodemocracy 2005/ Reclaim the Commons!
I went to the Reclaim the Commons festival on the 18th, and to the GBUG Skillshare workshops on the 20th, as part of the Biodemocracy 2005 event in Philadelphia. It was AWESOME. I wish I could join them to protest today, but alas, I have no vacation days left, and I need my job.
For those of you who aren't familiar with the event, here's a quick breakdown:
"The world’s largest convention of biotech and pharmaceutical executives is coming to Philadelphia this June.
Join us to resist their closed-door corporate agenda of GE agriculture, health care for profit, and bioweapons proliferation.
Give voice to a different vision of local food sovereignty, fair trade, health care for all, community power, biodiversity and honest science."
The skillshare workshops were the BEST.
I learned all about DIY solar energy, and the Rhiozome Collective gave an EXCELLENT presentation on Radical Urban Sustainability. Did you know you can clean up contaminated soil with nothing but oyster mushrooms? Or that you can make your own natural gas source with a water cooler jug, a bucket, a faucet, and some duck weed?
I also attended an interesting workshop on Permaculture, and ended up talking with someone who lives in a community called Acorn, which is part of the Federation of Egalitarian Communities.
It was one of the best days off ever!
I am drafting plans to build a solar oven on my porch, and am seriously considering a solar food dehydrator, and a solar space heater. I'm on the second floor, and I get too much sun for a lot of plants to grow, so this is a primo spot for solar!
How excited am I?
Pretty damn excited.

Hanging out outside at the skillshare workshops

As I walked past this great gathering of bike cops with the ominous phrase "Police Strike Force" printed on their backs, I heard them joking about whether or not one of them was "wearing underwears". Oh,no, this is not a typo. They proceeded to muse on the plural of underwear, vs. mulitple pairs of "underwears". YOUR tax dollars at work, folks.
